1. In Chitcani (Noul Neamt) monastery one will find the miraculous icon from 1401 and the highest bell tower from Moldova.

2. “Buchetul Moldovei” is the older brother of the Italian “Martini” and contains infusions of more than twenty plants/herbs.

3. In 2001, Moldova became the first former Soviet state to elect a Communist as its president.

4. Gagauzia became an autonomous region of Moldova in 1994.

5. Moldova was founded by Prince Bogdan, around the mid-fourteenth century.

6. Moldova gained independence from the USSR on August 27, 1991.

7. Moldova is a member of the United Nations, WTO, OSCE, GUAM, CIS, BSEC and other international organizations.

8. Moldova became a part of the Russian Empire, under the name of Bessarabia, in 1812.

9. An adopted Ukrainian meal, colțunași is sort of  ravioli, only better.

10. The maximum elevation of any of the hills found in the region does not exceed 430 meters or 1,411 feet above the sea level. The highest point among the hills is the country is found in Balanesti Hill.

11. Moldova has a break away territory (Transnistria).

12. Transnistria has its own currency, president, government, border patrol, etc.

13. (Unofficially) Transnistria is only recognized as a country by Russia.

14. Europe’s largest Jewish cemetery is in Chisinau.

15. The capital Chisinau is not pronounced “Chisinau”. It is actually pronounced like, “Kishi-now”.

16. Moldova ranks 130th in the world in terms of population and 140th in the world in terms of area.

17. Nistru river (2m) is the lowest point in Moldova. Beleu and Manta are the largest natural lakes in Moldova.

18. Moldova wine export is very important for the country’s economy as wine producing is the main industry. Almost half of the population is involved in the process of making wine and viticulture.

19. You have to take your shoes off at the front door, when entering in a Moldovan house.

20. It is traditional to see large floor rugs hanging on the walls as decoration.

    what ?!?!?!? since when?

    • Officially there are no documents regarding this, but unofficially Russia supports Transnistria in everything.

        Please acknowledge the mistake and correct it in the article, until you have misled too many people. Until there will be no official documents, this region is not recognized by anyone. I appreciate the intention to promote Moldova, but being that it is not too known so far, it would be a shame for it to be discovered with the wrong impression from the start. Thank you!

    “13. Transnistria is only recognized as a country by Russia”- This is not so. Transnistria is not officially recognized by Russia. Only recently Rogozin hinted that they may consider doing so because the current Moldovan gvernment is refusing to join the Customs Union…

    OK, so it’s not Ukraine, but its still a beautiful country and absolutely worth visiting.
    Moldovans are fun, funny, friendly, fearless and fascinating, so what do you have to lose?

    The train leaves early in the morning from Kyiv, and you’ll be eating Mămăligă and drinking some of Europe’s finest wine before they day is over…
