Even though Gérard Depardieu has left France in a bit of a sulk, (Ok he wanted to lower his tax bill, but being called ‘pathetic’ by Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault, probably didn’t help), he can still enjoy fine wine. Many French experts have come to support Moldova’s resurgent wine industry and now Russia’s newest citizen Depardieu is set to star in a film about expat wine producers in Moldova.
Azerbaijani playwright and writer Rustam Ibraghimbecov wants Depardieu to appear in a new film which will follow the life of a Moldovan winemaker who collaborates with foreign winemakers to rebuild an ancient winery. Ibraghimbecov visited Moldova last year to find locations and apparently was very impressed by Moldova’s underground wine cellars, many of which are ancient and include the world’s largest wine cellar.
The Moldovan Union of Cinematographers has accepted the project, subject to funding. The film will be shot on location in Chisinau.
